"Since the ascension of the current President of the PRC, Xi Jinping, the situation of Catholics in China has been steadily deteriorating. However, they have never had it easy. The history of Catholics and the Catholic Church in China has been a turbulent story in which chapters of mistrust and persecution have alternated with occasional periods of calm and mutual respect for the status quo."
