We are discovering China

We are interested in society, culture and language

About the Seminar

The Chinese Studies Seminar is a department at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University, which teaches Chinese Cultural Studies in the Bachelor’s and the Follow-up Master’s Degree programmes. The Chinese Studies Seminar is one of three sinology departments in Czech universities. It offers intensive studies of modern Chinese as well as studies of Chinese culture from various perspectives (society, politics, history, Chinese thought, and literature). Students can choose from a wide range of scholarships to study in China or Taiwan. The Chinese Studies Seminar also regularly organizes summer schools, international conferences, workshops, and other interesting activities outside the actual degree programme.

“China’s importance in today’s world is growing, it is becoming a global superpower. From the media we are increasingly learning about Czech businessmen and politicians visiting China and signing contracts for projects with Chinese partners. China itself is developing global projects in which the Czech Republic wants to participate and which are presented by (some) Czech politicians as a chance not to be missed.

At the same time, these very same projects are controversial, since in many comments China is presented not as a chance, but as a threat to the 21st century. The contradictory and often extreme responses to current Chinese expansion are often connected with unease that is the result of the difficulty of comprehending Chinese realities and attitudes. Czech society needs more experts on China who are able to clarify Chinese attitudes in various situations including their complex inter-connections. People proficient in the Chinese language are also needed. The study programme Cultural Studies of China is educating such professionals. The study is demanding, but it pays off, opening up a fascinating and disturbing world which will be increasingly blending with the world we live in.”
